Inventor is probably the most powerful 3D CAD system at the moment and is widely used for developing everything from cars to cellphones. Other closely related Autodesk products handles most of the buildings drawn by architects spanning from houses to skyscrapers.
Why we use Inventor as a base tool?
Autodesk who is developing Inventor, is most known for their Autocad software.
From the 80's to mid 90's Autocad was the only real choice for developing complex design.
It gave birth to many 3D systems in the 90's and I would say they where overcome by competitors in the late 90's. But in 2000 Autodesk started developing a 3D Cad system to fight back the competitors.
Since then Autodesk with their Inventor series, has regained the position as the most powerful CAD software for complex designs. Not only by having a powerful software platform, but also by having Autocad in reserve.
